IS SOCIAL MEDIA A THREAT??

U.S. Military Works To Counter Social Media Threat (Found online at WHNT- Channel 19)

(Personal Employee Pages Could Offer Sensitive Information To Enemies)

Attempts to steal United States military secrets have been around as long as the country itself, but now our enemies have a new tool at their disposal... social media.Websites like Twitter, Facebook and Flickr are used by thousands of military personnel and contract employees. If these workers aren't careful about what they post, they could open the door to those looking for sensitive information. -WHNT CHANNEL 19
The Army has recently published a social media handbook to help guide workers on best practices for social media use. The Army hopes anyone working in a military capacity will read it.

In addition to the publication of a handbook, the Army now gives rigorous training on social media use to soldiers and personnel. Chang said there have been no leaks of classified information via social media to date.
She adds that ultimately social media is just another form of communication – one deserving of the same rules of secrecy military workers have practiced for decades.
When you think about the Red stone Arsenal  in Huntsville, Alabama do you think that these employees have a Facebook or a twitter? To my surprise, they do. what about the fact that the idea that foreign governments, spies or terrorists might be looking to glean important state secrets from personal Facebook pages might seem far-fetched but the military is sure our enemies are watching. Wow! How much information do you put on your "Social Media" Device? Does this put more rules on how Military employees have to handle themselves outside and inside of work? I think so. With any other job you still have to be very careful about what you put on the internet. there are people that are constantly looking at everything you do.

Until Next Time,

  1. This does not surprise me at all. With all the mess that happened after Wikileaks, it's not surprising that enemy countries would utilize social media to get ahead.

  2. Social media networks are a very powerful tool that will let you know what is going on with a person, group, or company. So people really need to be careful and think before posting something that could actually harm them. if you get something negative thanks to a social network then Media would become into a threat for you.

  3. I have to say that i think that at the moment that the Social media can be a threat but is not there yet, well in this country anyway. I also must say that it has become a major issue, however i hope that people use this not to start riots but start friendships.

  4. It is scary when you think about it. People have to be very careful with what they put on social networking sites. Even though they may have their profiles set to private, there are ways around those settings. I know I am very careful not to post anything on my own social networking profiles that will come back to haunt me in the future.
